Best Time to Climb Cotopaxi & Trek Ecuador
The best time to climb Cotopaxi — or to trek anywhere in Ecuador — comes down to one thing: the weather windows. Because Ecuador sits right on the equator, it doesn’t have summer and winter the way most travellers expect. Instead the mountains swing between wetter and drier periods, and that, far more than temperature, decides your odds of a clear summit or a dry trail.
Here’s how to time it.
The two windows that matter
For the high volcanoes, two periods stand out for stable weather and the best summit success:
- December to early February — often the clearest skies of the year and a prime window for climbing Cotopaxi.
- June to August/September — the long dry-ish season, reliable for both climbing and trekking, and the busiest window with international visitors.
Outside these, the mountains are still climbable — conditions are just less predictable, with more cloud, wind and fresh snow.
Month by month
- Dec–Jan: Excellent. Cold, clear, stable. Top choice for Cotopaxi and Chimborazo summits.
- Feb–Apr: Wetter and more variable. Climbs happen, but expect more weather days.
- May: Transitional, often quieter on the trails.
- Jun–Aug: The classic high season — dry underfoot, good for the Quilotoa Loop and the volcanoes alike.
- Sep: Still good, gradually trending wetter.
- Oct–Nov: The wettest stretch up high; doable but the least predictable.
What about temperature?
At altitude it’s cold year-round — summit nights on Cotopaxi and Chimborazo are well below freezing in every month. What changes isn’t really the temperature; it’s the precipitation and wind. Dry, stable air means firmer snow, better visibility and a safer climb.
And the Galápagos?
The islands are a different climate entirely, and great for hiking the Galápagos all year. Roughly:
- December–May: warmer, sunnier, occasional short showers.
- June–November: cooler and drier underfoot, with a breezier ocean — excellent for long walks like Sierra Negra.
Our honest advice
If your only goal is the best possible summit odds, aim for late December–January or July–August. If you have flexibility and want fewer crowds, the shoulder weeks on either side of those windows can be lovely — just build in a spare day or two for weather.
